Work set to start on long-delayed new school
Kier Construction has secured the stage one design deal for the long-delayed rebuild of Heronsbridge School in Bridgend, south Wales.
The £2m deal was awarded via the SEWSCAP4 framework and covers the initial design of a 300-place school for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties, and autism.
The new-build facility will be developed around a mile from the school’s current site in Ewenny Road to the Island Farm area.
The full build was delayed after the original budget rose from £34m to around £55m.
It was previously due for completion in 2026, but will now run to the 2027-28 academic year.
Bridgend County Borough Council leaders said the scheme will boost capacity and introduce modern facilities including a library, coffee shop, and potentially a swimming pool, alongside two five-bedroom residential blocks, and a replacement care facility for Harwood House.
Kier beat three rivals to land the design stage.
The main NEC4 construction contract – capped at £53.5m – will follow in a separate award after design work is completed and approved.
